On 23 and 24  November 2021, EU DataViz provide the opportunity to share experiences and latest trends in open data and data visualisation. Online from Luxembourg to the world, the event was organised by the Publications Office of the European Union as part of the EU Open Data Days. 

The conference is funded by ISA2 programme of the European Union, bringing together the open data and data visualisation community, including policymakers, researchers, academia, private entities, students and citizens interested in the power of open data as a factor determining our future.

KNOWAGE contributed to the event with the talk: “Data visualization on mobile devices – issues and best practices from a real use case in the public sector“.

Starting from our experience in the health sector in Veneto Region (Italy) during this pandemic, Marco Cortella (KNOWAGE Data visualization Specialist) and Davide Vernassa (KNOWAGE UX and Front-end Developer) illustrated some of the challenges and possible solutions in the creation of dashboards and data visualizations designed to be primarily usable by mobile devices.

The South Tyrol Free Software Conference (SFScon) is one of Europe’s most established annual conferences promoting the use of Free Software in digital infrastructures as a tool to achieve greater innovation and competitiveness in the region.

This year, SFScon 2021 took place on Friday, 12th November and Saturday, 13th November 2021 in blended mode.

KNOWAGE joined the The South Tyrol Free Software Conference with the aim to promote the new version of the open source analytics and business intelligence.The new functionalities of KNOWAGE 8 allow to integrate advanced and increasingly customized analyses in decision-making processes in a simple and rapid way.

KNOWAGE collaborated with Ow2, sharing a common booth and contributing to OW2 track with the talk “The open source solution for data analysis in the age of digital transformation”. The synergy between OW2 and KNOWAGE in this event, certainly was a good example of collaboration between companies and organizations to make open source a powerful resource for everyone.

KNOWAGE 8 is now available for download at this page. The new release brings many significant new features and general improvements. Among the most important: the widget gallery, the function catalog and the resource manager.

THE WIDGET GALLERY: the administrator/developer can create templates for widgets (html, custom chart and R/Python) using the Gallery management. The end user can create a new widget choosing from the templates available in the widget gallery tab. The widget gallery can also be imported/exported among different environments.

THE FUNCTION CATALOG: the user can browse predefined R/Python scripts to add advanced analytics in the main widgets. It is possible to save own scripts to reuse it later. The function catalog can also be imported/exported among different environments.

THE RESOURCE MANAGER: the administrator can now directly manage resources (ML models, Talend processes, geographic layers, dossier templates, BIRT and Jasper translations, html pages) via web console, without the need to connect to the server.

Furthermore, KNOWAGE 8 is available not only in English, French and Spanish, but also in German, American, Portuguese and Chinese.

Since this version, KNOWAGE can natively access to Google Spanner and Azure Synapse Analytics data sources.

In the end, KNOWAGE 8 authentication is allowed also via Google IAM and Azure AD.

Knowage talk has been selected among 151 submissions from 47 countries. Marco Cortella (KNOWAGE Data visualization Specialist) will present with Davide Vernassa (KNOWAGE UX and Front-end Developer) the talk: “Data visualization on mobile devices – issues and best practices from a real use case in the public sector“.

Data visualization techniques allow providing end user with relevant information and insights in the most effective way. At the moment, the vast majority of companies and public entities visualize data through charts and dashboards conceived as desktop solutions and large screens or for print. However, the usage of content from mobile devices has been growing rapidly and is necessary to enable the access to reliable information in an easier and more interactive way. User interactions on desktop and mobile is deeply different and depends on the different screen sizes, so knowing how to adapt the data visualizations conceived for large screen to smaller ones is a fundamental asset.
Starting from our experience in the health sector in Veneto Region (Italy) during this pandemic, we would like to illustrate some of the challenges and possible solutions in the creation of dashboards and data visualizations designed to be primarily usable by mobile devices.
This pandemic period showed us the limitations, exclusions and misleading behind visualizations: taking inspiration from these cases, we will present the state of the art of data visualization on mobile and how it can evolve to meet the needs of users according to our experience.

This talk will present the last version of KNOWAGE, the open-source suite for analytics and business intelligence powered by the OW2 community. KNOWAGE 8 collects all recent efforts and will bring new rich pre-built components within dashboards, an expansion of the in-cloud offer and many new functions aiming to further enhance user experience.
This talk will address the importance of an effective data visualization and analysis as well as the detailed presentation of the new innovative functions of the last version.

In COMPANIES TRACK, Noemi Maglio (KNOWAGE Business Developer) will hold the talk “Community, Cooperation and Co-business with open source“.

This intervention aims to illustrate how to do open source in an industrial way by developing a sustainable business model. The experience of KNOWAGE, the open source suite for analytics and business intelligence, will be shown to highlight how community, cooperation and co-business are key element to make open source a real business enabler.

In the PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION & GIS track, Grazia Cazzin (KNOWAGE Director) will hold the speech “Data analysis for enterprises with open source – KNOWAGE real use cases“

This talk aims to highlight the benefits and strengths of open source solutions for enterprises and public administrations willing to gain relevant insights from their data. Different use cases will be presented in which KNOWAGE, the open source suite for analytics and business intelligence, enabled effective data analysis helping to achieve data-driven decisions.

KNOWAGE is joining the Free Software Conference together with other OW2 Community projects, with the aim to promote this association and the capabilities of its projects.
