Knowage at POSS19

The 5th edition of the Paris Open Source Summit is taking place on 10 and 11 December 2019 at the Docks de Paris. This is Europe’s leading event dedicated to the fields of Open Source, free software and open innovation. It came about through the merger between Solutions Linux and the Open World Forum, two iconic events in the sphere of free software and Open Source. Its purpose is to highlight the technological innovations, latest developments and economic dynamism of this digital sector’s solutions and its societal impact.

Knowage Committment

Knowage will support OW2 Community Booth and will deliver the “Analytics over IoT” speech during the IoT Platform & Framework session at 17:40h in Plateau 1. The speech will show through real use cases in the fields of Smart Manufacturing, Smart Energy and Smart Cities how Knowage allows to easily gather, visualize and perform analysis on data coming from sensors and Iot hardwares.

Ow2 presence

OW2 is as usual highly involved in POSS.  In this edition, OW2 will be hosted in the Community Booth #D12, presenting the community’s project and activities at large and showcasing some community projects. Moreover, OW2 organizes four sessions, presented below.

1. OPEN SOURCE COMMUNITY SUMMIT (Dec 10 from 02:00 to 06:30pm)
The theme this year is “Key Challenges of Mainstream Open Source”. It will collect contributions from: Cédric Thomas (OW2), Thierry Carrez, (OpenStack), Simon Phipps, (Meshed Insights), Mirko Boehm (Endocode), Emmanuel Lecharny (Apache Foundation), Frédéric Aatz (Microsoft), Leslie Hawthorn (Red Hat) and Astor Nummeling Carlberg (Open Forum Europe).

2. OSS IN BIG CITIES (Dec 11, from 02:00 to 03:30pm)
In this session executives in charge of large municipal information systems will discuss the tenets of their open source strategies. It will collect contributions from: Philippe Bareille (City of Paris), Alessandro Franco (CSI-Piemonte), Ben Cerveny (Public Code Foundation), Esteve Almirall (City of Barcelona) and Jacob Green (Mosslabs). 

3. COLLABORATIVE INNOVATION (Dec 11, from 09:30 to 11:00am)
This session will illustrate how multinational partners leverage open source in European publicly-funded collaborative research and innovation programs. It it will present the following OW2 projects: DECODER, FASTEN, ReachOut, CROSSMINER and MELODIC.

4. OSS GOVERNANCE (Dec 11, from 11:00 to 12:30pm)
This session aims at developing and promoting the usage and sharing of free and open source software governance best practices among large users and systems integrators. It will collect contributions from: Christian Paterson (Orange), Cédric Thomas (OW2), François Desmier (MAIF), Franck Villaume (Microsoft), Florent Zara (Henix).

Free Software Conference Event Highlights

On 15th and 16th of November, Bozen (South Tyrol – Italy) hosted the 19th edition of the Free Software Conference. It is an annual conference aimed at the general public, but in particular at decision-makers in the public administration and business worlds. The Free Software Conference (SFScon) promotes the use of Free Software in IT infrastructures as a tool to achieve greater innovation and competitiveness in the region.

The OW2 Consortium sponsored the event and managed a track of speeches in the Seminar 4 on Friday afternoon. In the first speech of OW2 track, Cedric Thomas, OW2 CEO, presented FOSS Models and Upcoming Challenges. Then, Grazia Cazzin, Knowage Director, took the stage and presented how KNOWAGE is the effective open source answer to the new needs in data analysis and exploration. The track ended with the speech of Paolo Boldi, full professor and co-ordinator of the PhD Program in Computer Science (Department of Computer Science, University of Milan) about FASTEN project.

EU Dataviz Conference Event Highlights

EU DataViz 2019 took place on 12 November 2019 in Luxembourg. The event, organised by the Publications Office of the European Union and supported by the ISA² programme of the European Commission, aimed to bring together the data visualisation community of the public sector in order to present and explore emerging trends and innovative initiatives.

Here follows our brief EU Dataviz Conference Digest.

The conference has been preceded by the Speakers Networking Dinner on 11th of November.

On the following day, some 400 participants gathered in the European Convention Center.

At Knowage booth Marco Cortella (Senior solution designer) and Noemi Maglio (Business Developer) discussed on possible integrations and collaboration to fully exploit end effectively present the huge amount of data available for public sector in EU.

At 14:40 Davide Vernassa (Senior front end developer) took the stage for the speech “Accessibility in data visualization“.

Davide highlighted that accessibility for visually impaired people is not really a trending topic in data visualization. While everyone is talking about digital transformation, color-blind and visually impaired people are out of the games. Knowage is among the first BI tools that faced the challenge of making data really available for everyone, joining the European P4All Project. He showed all accessibility features available in Knowage that are helping not only visually impaired people but also the elders and people that need to work in special visibility conditions. Knowage at the EU Dataviz Conference

EU DataViz 2019 is an international conference taking place on 12 November 2019 in Luxembourg, organised by the Publications Office of the European Union and supported by the ISA² programme of the European Commission. The purpose of the conference is to bring together the data visualisation community of the public sector and beyond, in order to present and explore emerging trends and innovative initiatives. Some 400 participants are expected to attend: experts and practitioners engaged in data visualisation for the public sector in Europe.

Knowage has been selected among 102 submissions from 33 countries. At Knowage booth Marco Cortella (Senior solution designer) and Noemi Maglio (Business Developer) will be available for live demoes of the brand new Knowage 7.0.

From 14:00 to 15:15, in the EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES thematic session, Davide Vernassa (Senior front end developer) will held the speech “Accessibility in datavisualization“. The thematic session will show in action all accessibility features already available in Knowage and the new upcoming ones:

  • ARIA labels enhancements with angular.js
  • Mouseless navigation
  • Freedom to the user interface choices
  • Keep user preferences anytime and everywhere
  • Making geo-localized BI accessible
  • APDF and MP3 conversion by integrating Robobraille
  • SONIFICATION to translate a chart to sounds.
